The final year of university is a daunting period of our lives. We are often faced with the question, ‘so what are your plans for after university?’. Well, on top of this worry, we are also in the midst of completing a dissertation, getting through our many assignments and projects, searching for our ‘future jobs’, and not to mention the group work! Final year students are under a lot of pressure, although it will all be worth it in the end, it can feel very over whelming and stressful at the time.
According to Healthline, stress can lead to; headaches, heartburn, rapid breathing, risk of heart attack, missed periods, tense muscles, stomach ache, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, weakened immune systems, insomnia and increased depression… just to name a few. Stress can lead to many unwanted impacts on the body, therefore it is important we do as much as we can to avoid it, which is a tough job as a third year PR student. I can’t promise that the following tips will take away all your worries, but they will definitely make you feel more in control of your deadlines.
To do lists & mini deadlines
Creating to do lists can be a great way to keep on top of your work. This can be done before you go to bed, so when you wake up in the morning feel fresh, you know exactly where to start. And I think we can all agree, there is nothing more satisfying than ticking something off on your to do list! Mini deadlines can also help with this, but make sure your deadlines are achievable. I would suggest setting aside extra time for deadlines, as more often than not things can take twice as long as you would imagine! The key to keeping on top of your work is organisation, so do lists and mini deadlines can help with this.
Talk to your tutors
Whether it is a question about an assignment, your future job prospects or you just need somebody to confide in, your tutors are always there to help. This can be by email, in person, or even a phone call, everyone is human and everybody needs a bit of reassurance sometimes.
Don’t compare yourself to other students
We have probably all came across those people that enjoy telling everybody how much work they have got done and how ahead they are, but it is important not to compare yourself to other people. Everyone has their own ways of working, so don’t let other people stress you out. Work in a way that is best for you, and makes you feel comfortable. But I mean, if it’s the night before the deadline and you still haven’t started, then maybe you should stress a tad …
Invest in new stationary
You will be surprised at how much new stationary can brighten up your day when studying for third year! Studying all the time can become tedious, so why not invest in some new stationary to spruce up your notes. I’m not saying break the bank and go wild, Wilko has an affordable range of stationary.
If you don’t have to take on too much… don’t!
It’s very difficult to balance your social life, university work and paid jobs all at the same time. But if you get offered an extra shift that you can do without, crack on with your assignments instead! Although the cash might be appealing, your grades are more important. If you are struggling to manage your finances, your bank and various websites can offer you support and advice.
It’s a day job
You have probably heard this piece of advice around 100 times already, but that’s because it works. Treat your assignments like a 9 am till 5pm day job. Get to the library for 8.50, grab your cup of coffee and get cracking by 9! Its heavy going, but beneficial.
Sleep, exercise & water
It’s simple really. Make sure you are hydrated, getting enough sleep and exercising. This doesn’t necessarily have to be going the gym, you could walk home instead of the bus, or have a go at a home workout video (there are plenty of these on Youtube). Either way, time to clear your head and let off some steam before winding down is a good idea. Staying up until the early hours of the morning doing assignments is not a good way to cope with stress and can often make things worse. A study by the National Sleep Foundation found that poor sleep makes managing stress more difficult, and can negatively impact concentration, learning, listening and memory. Although it sounds obvious, it is important to stay hydrated whilst studying. Lack of water can lead to drowsiness and fatigue, which is something third year students just don’t have time for!
Classical music playlist
I agree, it doesn’t sound particularly exciting. But, working to a beat can really help you get in the ‘study zone’, it blocks out surrounding noise, and classical music means you are not tempted to sing along.
