Philippa Brown

I am in my final year of education, studying a Masters degree in PR and Strategic Communication at Leeds Beckett University. Having previously studied PR at Sheffield Hallam University I decided to continue my studies in this field due to the excellent industry opportunities offered at Leeds Beckett. Having previously helped care for my father, my industry experience is limited however I have volunteered with a small charity that offers aid to asylum seekers, developing promotional campaign material. Additionally, I have campaigned for Cancer Research and Diabetes UK awareness and fundraising events.

Having consistently worked in part time roles alongside my studies, twice being in supervisor roles that included a great deal of leadership, I have developed many transferable and soft skills which are necessary for a career in PR. These include, excellent verbal and written communication, critical observation, problem solving, and working as part of an organised team, often under pressure. Examples demonstrating these include manually trading when the tills stopped working on a busy weekend, and delivering KPI presentations to a high standard.

An example of a success is having participated in researching, developing and pitching a PR campaign to Harris Associates, an award-winning PR agency, where our team won the pitch. Speaking about our work Harris commented on “the incredible amount of detail on every aspect of the campaign, which was a great client facing pitch we would be happy to deliver ourselves.”

With regards to a long-term career goal, I am interested in consumer PR however would like to begin in a more generalist agency to see what I liked and disliked and go from there. Ideally, I would love to work for a global agency and have the opportunity to work abroad at some point.
