Matthew Shevlin

I am currently studying MA Public Relations and Strategic Communications at Leeds Beckett University. Previously, I studied BA Journalism at the University of Sunderland, completing my degree with a 2:1.

Since graduating, I have worked in a variety of roles where I have cultivated my interest and skills in Media and Communications. Firstly, I worked for Sunderland AFC as a Digital Intern. There, I improved my interviewing and writing skills, working to produce on-the-final-whistle match reports and reaction pieces to various matches that the club played in.

In November 2016, I began working for the University of Sunderland as a Marketing Content Producer. There, I worked as part of a four-person team to produce original content for the launch of the University’s new website. This gave me a great insight into the practice of SEO, along with using Content Management Systems. I also gained experience at running professional Social Media accounts and devising suitable campaigns for those platforms.

Since beginning my studies at Leeds Beckett, I have worked on honing my Public Relations skills. This has included working as part of a team to devise an active Strategic Communications campaign for Harris Associates. I have also received advice on how to improve the skills that I began to develop while studying for my Undergraduate degree, including writing releases, working to tight deadlines and using other forms of Media, such as camerawork and photography.

Currently, I am balancing a part-time role with the University of Sunderland’s Alumni team with writing my dissertation, which will look at the relationship between journalists and PR Practitioners.
