A showcase of Leeds Beckett University's students in the School of Public Relations and Journalism
Author: Huriyyah Sakeb
I’m Huriyyah, a current PR & Journalism student at Leeds Beckett University. I’m a friendly person with a natural flair for creativity. My willingness to meet new people and desire to do the best in everything I do (from presentations in class to the customer service in my part-time job) are assets that I believe will help me excel in my desired field of PR and Marketing.
Engagement with new audiences and colleagues is something that has been developed from the clients of a home-made business I set up six years ago. I have designed and created henna art from a young age and turned it into a freelance business over time. This has allowed me to showcase my skills via Instagram (@huriyyahhenna) and also develop professionalism, making connections from the Asian wedding/beauty industry along the way.
During my first year at University, I took part in a short-term placement at BOXmedia, a video marketing agency in North Leeds. This was my first PR experience, and I was able to further develop my technical skills in programs such as excel, photoshop, and CyberLink video editing software.
Studying 3 Languages at GCSE, including Spanish, Urdu, and German, shaped my enthusiasm for foreign languages. This directed me to further pursue Spanish as an A Level and allowed me to take part in an exchange program where I live in Madrid for a week. I was able to develop communication and key interpersonal skills that I do not think I would have been able to attain from elsewhere.
My current career goals include obtaining a placement year in either PR or Marketing, or both, within the film industry, and further developing my career in this field upon graduation
