I am an enthusiastic communication student with a passion for the international. As a Dutchman growing up in Tanzania, I have had the opportunity to be shaped by a lot of very diverse and inspiring people. During my BA International Communication, I have successfully completed many projects in internal communication as well as external market research, having led teams in both fields I have discovered an affinity for leading and motivating people.
Communication is about understanding people, and understanding people is partly – I believe – about being able to understand their language and culture. I am fluent in Dutch, English, and German, and have a basic understanding of Swahili. Over the past 5 years I have been able to lead many intercultural teams, and have discovered the great value a diverse team can have.
Through completing many projects for clients, I have gained an understanding of what it means to meet many stakeholder needs. One project involved setting up an ‘innovation lab’ at Westerbork, a large memorial centre in the Netherlands. The aim of this space was to involve visitors and students, to help them develop innovative ideas to tell the history of Westerbork in fresh ways relevant to the modern environment. Other projects involved auditing internal communications and finding creative ways to boost employee engagement, developing a communications strategy for business development in defence and security markets, and setting up a intercultural awareness course for Dutch students going abroad.
In the coming years I aim to be working in the internal communications field, in a multicultural setting. I hope to be able to help companies and their employees experience the benefit of their international teams, creating a profitable and enjoyable working environment.
